Carpet Types and Styles

  • Wall-to-wall Carpet: Wall-to-wall carpet covers the entire floor, baseboard to baseboard.
    • Advantages of wall-to-wall carpet:
      • Securely anchored carpet does not shift
      • Maximum potential for insulation
      • Maximum potential for energy conservation
      • No special treatment is required
      • It may camouflage worn floor
    • Disadvantages of wall-to-wall carpet:
      • More square yardage may mean more initial cost
      • Installation required
      • It has to cleaned in place
      • It is diffilcult to relocate
  • Carpet Module: Carpet modules are 18' X 18' squares of carpet, which are laid over the floor just like the tiles.
    • Advantages of carpet module
      • Minimum loss of material during installation
      • Easily rotated to equalize traffic and soiling patterns
      • They are easily replaceable
      • Individual carpet modules may be lifted to access underfloor service trenches.
    • Disadvantages of carpet module
      • Initial cost may be high
      • If incorrectly installed, curling edges may increase chances of tripping
      • If incorrectly installed, joints may separate
  • Area Rug: As opposed to carpet, the term 'rug' usually refers to loose-laid rugs smaller than 9 X 6 ft. in size. These can be laid directly over the floor or over wall-to-wall carpet.
    • Advantages of Area Rugs
      • These are available in vast variety of colors, shapes, designs, material, texture and price range.
      • They are easy to relocate or move
      • No installation is required
      • Are rugs are highly decorative
    • Disadvantages of Area Rugs
      • Area rugs tend to shift and/or slide
      • Unsecured edges may cause tripping
         
  • Runner: 'Runner' is the term usually applied to a rug measuring not more than 3-4 ft wide and about 8-20 ft. in length.These are used most often in narrow areas like corridors and stairways, as well as walk-off mats
  • Walk-off Mats and Scatter Rugs: These are smaller rugs, usually not more than 2ft X 3ft, used to cover high traffic ares and in front of sinks etc. Novelty scatter rugs are alo used to accent furniture layouts.
    • Advantages of Scatter Rugs
      • They can be very decorative
      • Scatter rugs are easy to move
      • They can be used to protect small areas that have a high risk of soiling
    • Disadvantages of Scatter Rugs
      • Unsecured edges may cause tripping
