In terms of design, oriental rugs can be classified as having rectilinear or curvilinear design. Rectilinear designs are composed of geometric motifs and angular patterns while curvilinear designs are composed of floral motifs and patterns which are usually more intricate than the rectilinear designs. Rugs may contain both curvilinear and rectilinear patterns.
An oriental rug can be said to have two main parts: field and border. We will be discussing these further down the module.
