Q. Why opt for this WBT over books, classroom training or even CD-ROMs?

A Web Based Training Course, such as this one, presents an environment on the World Wide Web in which students and instructors can perform learning related tasks such as  communication, student assessment and class management. Students can access this course from their home or office, PC's or Macintosh, computers or laptops via modem. You can study the material, attempt quizzes, contact instructors and other classmates whenever you want. This is called Delivery-on-Demand. Besides this, you can set your own pace for the schedule of class time, regardless of when other students are accessing this course. In this way you can schedule this course around your work hours, during weekends or even late at night. This is referred to as Self Paced Learning.

The following table presents a evaluation of WBTs vis-a-vis Computer Based Training (CBT), Instructor Lead Training (ILT) or workshop, and books.

Q. How does this course work?

This course is based on the Internet. You sign up for the course from the Registration Desk and get instant access to the course. You may follow the Study Route in which you read the text and then attempt the quiz. Or you may follow the Quiz Route in which you do not read the material and just attempt the quizzes. If you face problems with quizzes, you may immediately switch to the Study Route and study that portion. At any point of time in the course, you can switch from the Study Route to Quiz Route and vice-versa

Your performance and scores are constantly tracked and monitored by instructor. You can also access your "Score Card" at any time in the course.

This course also allows you to freely communicate with your instructor and the fellow classmates with just click of a button.

Q. How long does it take to finish this course?

This course is completely 'Self Paced', meaning that you can take it from the comfort of your home or office, on your own schedule, using internet technology and tools. You can finish this course in one sitting, or spread it across many sessions over a month. We recommend that you finish this course in 30 days. Q. How do I navigate this course?

Navigating this course is simple and intuitive. You do not have to be very tech-savvy or a computer wiz to be able to explore and use it - all you need is a basic acquaintance with internet, web browsers (like Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator and America Online Browser) and know how to use a computer, keyboard and mouse.

This course is divided into seven chapters with a number of topics within a chapter. Details of the content covered is available in the Content Outline. You can either navigate through the Study Route or through the Quiz Route or a combination of both. Also, you can either go through the chapters in the given order, or in any order that you like! If you feel confident about a particular topic, you don't even have go through the study material - you can take the associated quiz. And don't worry if you don't pass it on the first or even the second try... you can try it as many times as you like - but certain restrictions apply. (There's nothing called a free lunch!)

Study Route: Each chapter contains study material and quizzes. The study material contains all the information required to attempt the quiz. So, we recommend that you at least browse through it, if only to refresh your memory. Then you can take the quiz.
The course will automatically bookmark the section last visited. So, if you are coming back to this course after a break, you can go to directly where you had left last time.

Quiz Route: The quiz route takes you to all quizzes, without going through the study material. But if  a quiz has you stumped, don't worry - you can go to associated section by clicking on the 'Quiz Route' button.

At any point of time in the course, you can switch from the Study Route to Quiz Route and vice-versa.

Glossary: While taking the course, if you come across a term that is unfamiliar, you can check it up in the built-in Glossary. If you are looking for a list of recommended reading, look at the Bibliography.

Q. What is 'Distance Learning'?

Distance Learning began with Postman delivered learning material for 'Correspondence Courses' during the 18th century, mainly for the children of British Missionaries living away from England. TV based educational programs were introduced during the middle of this century. Computer Based Training (CBT), Video and Audio courses also gained popularity as these technologies became popular and economical. Organizations, corporate houses and schools started using Local Area Networks (LANs) to distribute instruction, and this gradually lead to Wide Area Networks (WAN) - internet or World Wide Web (WWW) is such a network.

Q. How does the instructor monitor the student’s performance to validate participation and learning?

In this course, all assessment for the quizzes is handled automatically and all results, whether pass or fail, are entered into a database. The instructor monitors student’s performance online. The instructor has complete access to the performance record and scorecard of each of the students. This scorecard provides following information to the instructor:

  1. Number of questions attempted by the student
  2. Number of attempts made by the student for attempting these questions
  3. Number of questions passed
  4. Pass/Fail status for each question
  5. When was the last time the student attempted a particular question

Besides this, the instructor is available by e-mail to all students for consultation and guidance.

Q. How do you know that only one student is taking the course per each registration and not more?

One registration allows one student to take the course and we trust in the inherent honesty of people on that score. If more than one student wish to take the course then each individual student needs to register and pay for their registration. And if a person does use someone else's registration to access the course, only the Registrant receives CECs after the successful completion of the course. Like most of the courses offered by the universities, the students register for this course.
